And I see this on the official blog of Mafia Wars..Mafia Wars introduces Italy, a brand new destination that is full of challenges. A game containing the word mafia would not be complete without an homage to the country where it all began. Italy is in the Beta test phase and will be available to all accounts that have reached Level 5 or higher on October 23rd. There are no other requirements to gain access to Italy. The overall layout and functionality is very similar to Las Vegas but there are a few key differences.

We will have 8 Regions of Italy.. everything is looks like Vegas.. only they change the name of jobs, etc..

The currency is in Lira (note it is NOT in Euro), don't know why..
And we will have the The Italian Satchel of Lira which has the same function as Rack of Chips and Thai Envelope.

The currency is not in euros because the story at Italy is previous to 2001
Ahh after some minutes, I came to a better conclusion.
The currency is not euros because in the future, Zynga may release another European country and if that country also uses euros, there would be a conflict.
If Italy money was euros and the new european city also uses euros, it would be easier to get the items.
I think this is the best conclusion about why Zynga choose Lira for Italy
